The Ultimate 4-Day New York City Break
New York City is a place like no other. Whether it’s your first visit or a return trip, the city’s energy, skyline, and culture never fail to impress. But with so much to see and do, planning a city break can feel overwhelming. I always wanted to go to New York in December and in 2023, I did. It was a wonderful! I’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for you and this, I think, is a great itinerary. It balances iconic sights, cultural highlights, and fantastic food—giving you the best of the city without feeling rushed. If you can stretch to five days, it will be a bit more relaxed but you can certainly pack all this in, after all, you only live once!
Day 1: Classic New York – Landmarks & Skyline Views
Kick off your trip with some of New York’s most famous landmarks—the sights that define the city’s skyline and history.
Morning: Midtown & Times Square
• 5th Avenue – Stroll past designer stores, historic buildings, and famous department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue. If you go at Christmas, like me, then the shop windows are amazing, I was mesmerised! If you can, it’s good to look at the shop windows at night as well, as all the lights make it so magical.

• Rockefeller Centre – Home to the famous ice rink in winter and stunning Art Deco architecture all year round. You’ll love the hustle and bustle of these areas.
The New York Public Library on 5th Avenue is a must-visit for book lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and Sex and the City fans alike. Remember that scene on the steps outside? It really is a wonderful building and remember to arrive by 10am to be allowed in the Rose Main reading room with it’s vast wooden tables, warm golden light, and frescoed ceiling. Last entry is at 10.50am and it’s well worth doing. They do have tours, but it’s best to go to their website here to book and have a look at what’s available.
A visit to the library doesn’t take long, but it’s one of those places that lingers in your memory, offering a quiet moment in the heart of the city.

Afternoon: Central Park & Museums

Escape the skyscrapers and wander through Central Park. You can walk, cycle, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride to iconic spots like Bethesda Terrace and The Mall. We walked through central park and watched the skaters on the ice rink.
If you love culture, spend some time in one of these world-renowned museums:
The Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art) – A vast collection of art from ancient Egypt to modern masterpieces. We didn’t have time to visit the Natural History Museum, but I loved the Met.
It was full of beautiful artefacts, I could have spent at least a week in there. One of my favourite sections was the Art of Native America. The beading and embroidery was so detailed.

• MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) – Home to Van Gogh’s Starry Night and an impressive selection of contemporary art.
• The Natural History Museum – A fantastic choice if you love dinosaurs, space, or anything science-related.

One thing we did do, because we actually had five days, not four, was to go to see the New York Ballet perform The Nutcracker at the David H Koch building. I’m so glad we did , it’s a ballet that I love and it was truly amazing! Always good to check out what shows, Ballet, Bands are on as it’s good to book tickets before you arrive. Book them as far in advance as you can.
Evening: Sunset from the Empire State Building & Dinner
For an unforgettable New York moment, head to the top of the Empire State Building just before sunset. The views from the 86th-floor observation deck are incredible, but for an even more spectacular experience, pay extra to go right to the very top—the 102nd floor. Get there early and grab your spot, it’s definitely a must-see experience. Watching the city lights flicker on as the sun sets over the skyline is a must-do.

For dinner, head to Hell’s Kitchen, known for its excellent restaurants. Try Pure Thai Cookhouse for authentic Thai street food or Don Antonio for a classic New York-style pizza.
Day 2: Lower Manhattan
Today is all about history, waterfront views, and Brooklyn’s creative energy.
Morning: The Financial District & Statue of Liberty
Start early with a trip to Battery Park, where you can take a ferry to:
• The Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island – A must for history lovers, offering insights into New York’s immigrant heritage. Or take the Staten Island Ferry – It’s free and gives you fantastic views of the Statue of Liberty without the crowds.
We did a tour at night, taking in the Statue of Liberty, but be warned, it’s really cold so make sure you pay for a seat inside! It’s a great way to see everything by night,, something really different. We did the 9/11 memorial and museum first, looked around Wall Street, then went and had something to eat near the pier that the boat left from, and did our tour in the evening.

• Wall Street & the Charging Bull – The centre of global finance and an iconic photo spot.
• 9/11 Memorial & Museum – A moving tribute to the events of 2001. You could easily spend all day here. Be warned, it’s very emotional but really interesting. I felt very humble.
Day 3: The High Line, Chelsea & Greenwich Village,
Today is all about New York’s creative side, from elevated parks to hidden jazz bars.
Morning: The High Line & Chelsea Market
This is a great day of wandering and exploring. Start with brunch at Bubby’s in Tribeca, then walk the High Line, a beautiful park built on a former railway track. Along the way, visit:
• The Vessel – A striking honeycomb-shaped structure
• Chelsea Market – A fantastic spot for food lovers, with stalls selling everything from tacos to fresh seafood.
Afternoon: Greenwich Village & The West Village
A lot of the famous Brownstone buildings were beautifully decorated for Christmas. It was good to walk around and take it all in, there are tours you can do as well.

This area is famous for its historic streets, jazz clubs, and independent bookshops. Explore:
• Washington Square Park – A lively spot with musicians and street performers.
• The Friends Apartment – A fun stop for TV fans.
Evening:
This is a great experience and you can sample some food and all these areas are near each other, with plenty of paces to stop for a drink or a coffee.
• Chinatown – Try dumplings at Joe’s Shanghai or dim sum at Nom Wah Tea Parlour.
• Little Italy – A great place to grab a traditional cannoli from Ferrara Bakery.
Day 4: Exploring Beyond Manhattan
For your final day, venture beyond Manhattan and see a different side of New York.
Morning: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Head to Williamsburg, one of Brooklyn’s trendiest areas. Grab a coffee at Devoción, browse vintage shops, and take in the skyline views from Domino Park. I loved Williamsburg, the shops are great.
Afternoon: Queens or The Bronx
• Queens – If you love food, visit Flushing for the best Chinese food in the city or head to Astoria for incredible Greek cuisine.
• The Bronx – See Yankee Stadium, visit the Bronx Zoo, or explore the stunning New York Botanical Garden.
Evening: A Perfect NYC Send-Off
End your trip with one final New York moment:
• For sky-high views – Have a drink at The Summit at One Vanderbilt or Bar SixtyFive at The Rainbow Room.
• For a classic diner experience – Late-night pancakes at Tom’s Restaurant or Ellen’s Stardust Diner.
• For one last pizza – Grab a slice at Joe’s Pizza in Greenwich Village, an NYC institution. That’s if you can be bothered to wait in the huge queue! But it is worth it.
Final Tips for Your NYC City Break
• Get a MetroCard – The subway is the fastest way to get around.
• Book in advance – Broadway shows, observation decks, and top restaurants fill up quickly.
• Wear comfortable shoes – You’ll walk more than you think. It’s easier to walk a lot of the time as the traffic is heavy. The subway is really easy to understand and cheap.
• Plan, but leave room for spontaneity – Some of the best NYC moments happen when you least expect them.
